🌟 When Will My Baby Start Walking?

Walking Milestones: What’s Normal, What’s Not, and Why It’s All Okay

Two children play and walk joyfully, leaving footprints on a blue background. A woman in pink looks thoughtful, with a large question mark nearby.

If you’ve ever scrolled through social media and seen videos of tiny toddlers wobbling around at 10 months while your little one is happily crawling at 14 months, or maybe your family, neighbours, and well-meaning friends keep dropping comments like “Isn’t it time they started walking?”, this one’s for you.

💡 When Do Most Babies Start Walking?

While every little one follows their own path, here’s a general guide early childhood experts often reference:

Around 9–12 months:

Some babies start pulling up to stand and “cruising” along furniture.

By 12–18 months:

Many toddlers take those first independent steps.

By 18 months:

Most little ones are walking well on their own, though some may take a little longer, and that’s okay!

What If My Baby Isn’t Walking Yet?

If your child isn’t walking by 18 months, it’s a good idea to chat with your health visitor or paediatrician, but it doesn’t always mean something is wrong.

Some babies are naturally cautious, prefer crawling longer, or take their time strengthening those muscles. Many late walkers catch up quickly once they feel confident.

🌟 Signs Your Baby Might Be Getting Ready to Walk

✨Pulling up on furniture

✨Cruising (walking while holding on)

✨Standing unsupported for a few seconds

✨Pushing toys with wheels or walkers

✨Squatting to pick up toys and standing back up

Every small movement counts!

🎈 How to Encourage Walking, The GlimmerTots Way

No pressure. No forced “practices.” Just playful, natural opportunities:

Allow them to walk barefoot so they feel steady and confident on different surfaces.

✨Cheer those wobbly attempts with big smiles and claps.

✨Use push toys, laundry baskets, or anything sturdy they can safely push around the room to strengthen those little legs.

✨Place their favourite toys or objects just out of reach to gently tempt them into taking a step or two. (A quick reminder: safety first, always supervise and keep sharp objects and furniture corners out of the way.)

✨Be patient and celebrate what they can do now, not what they’re “supposed” to do next. Milestones will come when they’re ready.
